How to Install a Chicken Wire Fence

1. Determine how much fencing you need. Use small wooden stakes to mark the perimeter of your fence area. Measure the distance between each stake and add all the measurements together. This total will be the length of your fence. If the total length isn't a multiple of 5, add extra feet to make it divisible by 5 for easier installation. 2. Calculate the number of chicken wire stakes required. Take the total length of your fence and divide it by 5. This gives you the number of stakes you'll need to properly secure the fencing along the line. 3. Stretch a string between each wooden stake to create a guide. This string will help you align the chicken wire stakes evenly as you install them. 4. Start with the corners. Use a sledgehammer to drive the chicken wire stakes into the ground until the metal flange at the bottom is completely underground. Once the corners are in place, insert a stake every 5 feet between them to maintain consistent spacing. 5. Open the metal hooks on the chicken wire stakes using a screwdriver. These hooks will hold the wire in place once the fence is installed. 6. Attach the chicken wire to the stakes by hooking the wire through the open hooks. Make sure the bottom edge of the wire is level with the ground to prevent animals from digging underneath. 7. Close the hook around the wire to secure it to the stake. Hold the sledgehammer behind the stake and gently tap the hook shut with a regular hammer, ensuring it’s firmly fastened. 8. Use tent stakes to further secure the chicken wire. Push them through the wire and into the ground, providing extra stability and keeping the fence taut. This method helps keep the fence upright and prevents sagging over time.
