Nippon Electric Develops Wireless Monitoring System for PV Power Plants Using Low-Power Wireless Sensors

Nippon Electric Works Co., Ltd., based in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, recently launched a wireless monitoring system designed for photovoltaic power plants on May 27. This new solution aims to enhance the efficiency and reliability of solar energy systems by integrating advanced technologies. The company has combined its proprietary sensor system, "Mu Sensor," with the long-range wireless LAN technology called "FalconWAVE." This integration allows the system to support both small-scale and large-scale photovoltaic installations. The Mu Sensor is a 24/7 monitoring system that tracks the performance of solar power generation. Equipped with self-sustaining power sources, the sensor terminals can detect abnormal reductions in power output or equipment malfunctions and send real-time alerts directly to the administrator's mobile device. FalconWAVE enables wireless LAN communication without any additional data costs, making it an efficient and cost-effective solution. It also supports the transmission of video footage captured by surveillance cameras located at multiple sites, creating a comprehensive monitoring system that covers the entire photovoltaic plant. Looking ahead, Nippon Electric Works plans to expand its offerings. For smaller photovoltaic systems, the company will introduce solutions that allow users to monitor key components such as power conditioning units (PCS) and string voltages from solar panels using portable devices. For medium-sized and larger plants, the system will include IP cameras with built-in wireless communication capabilities, enabling remote monitoring of the entire solar panel setup via wireless LAN. These monitoring systems are designed to be self-contained and can be installed independently once the photovoltaic system is up and running. The price for a self-powered terminal, which uses a solar panel as its power source, starts at 170,000 yen. This makes the system accessible for a wide range of users, from individual homeowners to commercial operators looking to optimize their solar investments.
