What is a Bike Park?

In a mountainous country with a deep passion for mountain biking, it’s logical that ambitious networks of bike parks and MTB centers are developing. These have become highly sought-after destinations for both national and international cyclists.

A bike park is essentially a fenced-off area designed exclusively for cycling. They feature prepared and clearly marked trails of varying difficulty levels, most commonly for Enduro or downhill riding. Many of these parks utilize ski lifts during the summer when there’s no snow. Some even use vehicles to transport cyclists to the top of the trails. However, with the growing popularity of electric bikes, traditional mechanical lifts are becoming less essential.

On the other hand, MTB centers are open areas with trails marked and rated by difficulty. These are more casual and less extreme compared to bike parks. It’s also becoming common for bike parks to offer easier trails suitable for trail and cross-country cyclists.

The Best Bike Parks

The highest concentration of these facilities is found in the Pyrenees, with five of the selected centers located in the surrounding area. You’ll find even more across this mountain range. The remaining five are spread throughout the rest of the peninsula, ensuring that everyone has access to a bike park within a reasonable distance from home.

We’ve included neighboring Andorra in the selection due to its proximity and strong ties with the principality. Speaking of the Pyrenees and bike parks, it’s hard to overlook the most important ones in the region.

Of course, many other fantastic parks didn’t make the cut. Our hope is that this list serves as a reference and inspires you to explore others. Here’s our selection, arranged geographically rather than by quality:

Tips for Bike Parks

With the vast variety and quality of Bike Parks we’re fortunate to enjoy in Spain, it’s not easy to make a selection. We’ve chosen with criteria of uniqueness and geographical distribution to ensure the selection is balanced and practical for all types of riders. Outside this list, there are excellent options, such as Grand Valira in Andorra or Arán Bike Park in Lleida, another of the most important Bike Parks of Catalonia.

Take this list as an initiation guide to discover these cycling paradises that, in many cases, offer much more than just bicycle circuits, as you’ve seen, with an excellent offer of multi-adventure activities to complement your vacations or share them with the family.

And we end with a few tips to help you choose your destinations and plan your trips:

  • Check updated information on each bike park’s website. From one season to the next, there may be important changes. Read the park rules, schedules, mandatory equipment, etc.
  • Pay special attention to opening dates and times. Most parks limit opening to the summer months, when snow activity ceases, and some are only open on holidays and weekends. Some don’t have all services operational daily, like ski lifts.
  • Reserve your equipment in advance, especially if you plan to travel without a bike or equipment, intending to rent it at the destination in high season. At least confirm availability to avoid unpleasant surprises.
  • Choose parks with options suitable for your level, and gradually increase the difficulty. Facing a circuit with a difficulty too high for you can be frustrating and dangerous.
  • Consider using a specialized travel agency, which can provide valuable advice.
  • Take riding courses with expert instructors. If you’re just starting out, it’s highly recommended that you take a beginner’s course with professionals, which you can book at the bike parks themselves. You’ll be surprised by the results and you’ll shorten your learning period compared to self-learning.

We hope this list encourages you to discover new experiences and wonderful places to enjoy our hobby. For our part, we remind you that in the Mammoth stores and online, you’ll find everything related to cycling and the advice of our professionals, who will be happy to answer your questions and help you as much as possible.
