Can Mexican cactus generate electricity?

Mexico is rich in cacti, of which cactus is full of treasures. Its sap, fruit, stems and leaves are edible or made into medicines and beauty products. Nowadays, a local green energy start-up company has developed a biogas power generation equipment that can be used to generate electricity from cactus skin. . This device mixes organic waste with a special bacterial mixture and then heats them to 55 degrees Celsius to produce biogas that is then used to generate electricity.

The power plant will launch a pilot program in May in a cactus market in southern Mexico City. The region produces 200,000 tons of prickly pears each year. These cactus are sent to the market and will leave up to 10 tons of waste each day after being processed. Today, these wastes are used as raw materials for power generation equipment. The equipment is expected to reach its maximum production capacity in around November. It can handle 3 to 5 tons of waste per day and produce 170 cubic meters of biogas. Its maximum capacity is 175 kWh, enough to light about 960 energy-saving lamps.

The trial program costs 840,000 U.S. dollars (about 5.6 million U.S. dollars) and the funds come mainly from the Mexican city government. Rosas, the head of the city’s Ministry of Science and Technology Development, said: “Our vision is to extend this program to more than 300 agricultural markets in the city, so that they can become self-sufficient in energy.”
