Tapered bore bearings are typically installed using an interference fit. This method involves reducing the radial internal clearance or causing axial displacement of the inner ring on its conical journal, which helps in determining and measuring the amount of interference.
There are several methods to measure the interference:
1. **Feeler Gauge Method**: Measuring the reduction in clearance before and after installation. This is suitable for large and medium-sized spherical and CARB bearings, especially when measuring the clearance between the outer ring and unloaded rollers.
2. **Nut Tightening Angle Method**: A well-established technique used to determine the correct interference for small and medium-sized bearings on tapered journals. The tightening angle provides a reliable reference for positioning the bearing correctly on the conical shaft.
3. **Axial Push Interval Method**: This involves measuring the axial movement of the inner ring when pushed against the journal. The axial push interval serves as a guide for proper interference.
4. **Inner Ring Expansion Method**: By measuring the expansion of the inner ring, it's possible to accurately determine the correct position of large spherical and CARB bearings on the shaft.
One of the most effective techniques is the **SKF Push Method**, which offers a precise and efficient way to determine the exact amount of interference. This method uses a hydraulic nut with a dial gauge and a specially calibrated digital metering device connected to an oil pump. It controls the axial displacement of the bearing relative to its intended position, ensuring accurate and consistent results.
For even greater precision, **SensorMount™** is now available. This system integrates sensors directly into the bearing’s inner ring, along with a hand-held indicator and standard hydraulic tools. It simplifies the measurement process, regardless of whether the bearing is solid or hollow, and eliminates the need for complex calculations or assumptions.
