Li-Fi, short for "Light Fidelity," was first introduced by German physicist Harald Haas during his 2011 TED Talk. The concept is simple yet revolutionary: instead of using radio waves like traditional Wi-Fi, Li-Fi uses visible light from LED bulbs to transmit data. By rapidly switching the light on and off at a frequency imperceptible to the human eye, information can be encoded and transmitted through light signals.

To implement this technology, only a small microchip needs to be added to any standard LED bulb. This chip controls the rapid blinking of the light, turning it into a high-speed data carrier. Devices such as smartphones, laptops, and other smart gadgets equipped with special sensors can then pick up these light signals and access the internet.

One of the key advantages of Li-Fi is its enhanced security. Since light cannot pass through walls, the signal is confined to a specific area, reducing the risk of external interception. Additionally, because it operates on a different spectrum than Wi-Fi, it can offer faster speeds and less interference in crowded environments.

Oledcomm has already developed working Li-Fi systems and claims to have achieved connection speeds of up to 3 Gbps. With ongoing research led by Harald Haas, the technology is expected to push speeds even further, potentially reaching 10 Gbps in the near future. As this technology matures, it could eventually replace or complement Wi-Fi, offering a more efficient and secure alternative for high-speed data transmission.
