Facing the controversy of the trend of furniture customization

The furniture industry is entering a new phase, especially as the Lunar New Year approaches. Industry insiders say that from patchwork to "custom integrated furniture," this shift represents a fresh wave of innovation. The trend is now widely recognized, with custom-made furniture becoming a key focus in the market. According to a recent survey, only 6.7% of China's furniture market consists of customized pieces, compared to 70% in Europe and America. This gap highlights the growing desire for high-quality home living experiences. Over the next five years, China plans to build 36 million affordable housing units, which could create a 600 billion yuan custom furniture market, expected to grow by 30% annually. Mr. Guo recently shared his frustration after receiving a set of custom-made furniture. Upon delivery, he noticed that the furniture panels were extremely dirty, with visible stains and scratches on the wardrobe boards. The metal rods were still covered in tape, and even after removal, they remained sticky. The strong chemical smell was overwhelming. "How can this be considered high-level customization?" he asked, expressing his disappointment. He had spent a significant amount of money, yet the quality fell far short of expectations. What made Mr. Guo even more upset was the fact that the furniture was non-refundable. The contract clearly stated this policy, and he had signed it himself. "Custom-made furniture is supposed to meet personal needs. But if you can't return or exchange it, isn't that a bit inhumane?" he said, feeling deeply frustrated. This issue is not unique to Mr. Guo. Many consumers across China are facing similar problems with custom furniture. A manager at a furniture factory in Xianghe, Hebei, explained that because custom-made items are unique and cannot be resold, manufacturers typically only offer repairs instead of returns unless there's a serious quality issue. "If the furniture is manufactured and returned, it's usually due to environmental standards not being met. Consumers must provide relevant inspection reports. If there’s an error in design or measurement, and the problem lies with the merchant, then return or exchange may be possible. Otherwise, it's unrealistic to expect a return after installation." In recent years, the furniture industry has been moving toward the concept of "customized homes." Although challenges remain, terms like "customized and integrated" have become popular in the home design sector. The shift from patchwork to "custom integrated furniture" reflects a broader trend in the decoration industry. Before customizing furniture, consumers should be aware of the "unspoken rules," such as the "no refund, no change" policy. It's important to inspect everything carefully before signing any agreement. Online customization also carries risks, so caution is advised. Additionally, furniture merchants should clearly define their responsibilities and obligations to customers, setting clear expectations upfront to avoid future disputes.
