Metal Processing Online Lecture: Additives for Cutting Fluid

Cutting fluids play an important role in the field of machining and are widely used. Due to the increasingly complex working conditions of cutting and the continuous improvement of environmental protection standards by environmental organizations, many new issues have been raised for machining companies.

Additives are often added to improve the various properties of the cutting fluid. The commonly used additives are as follows.

Oily additive
It contains polar molecules and forms a strong adsorption film on the metal surface, which provides better lubrication at lower cutting speeds. Commonly used oil additives are animal oil, vegetable oil, fatty acids, gums, alcohols and lipids.
2. Extreme pressure additive
It is an organic compound containing elements such as sulfur, phosphorus, chlorine and antimony. It chemically reacts with the metal surface at a high temperature to form a chemical adsorption film resistant to higher temperatures and pressures, which prevents direct contact of the metal interface and reduces friction.
3. Surfactant
It is an additive that emulsifies mineral oil and water to form a stable emulsion. The surfactant is an organic compound consisting of a water-soluble polar group and an oil-soluble non-polar group, which can be aligned and adsorbed at the oil-water two-phase interface, and the polar end is directed to the water. , non-polar end oil, the water and oil are connected, so that the oil is stably dispersed in water with tiny particles to form an emulsion. The surfactant can also be adsorbed on the metal surface to form a lubricating film, which acts as a lubricating agent for lubrication. Commonly used surfactants are sodium petroleum sulfonate, sodium oleate soap and the like.
4. Anti-rust additive
It is a very polar compound with strong adhesion to the metal surface, adsorbed on the metal surface to form a protective film, or combined with the metal surface to form a passivation film to prevent rust. Commonly used anti-rust additives are sodium carbonate, triethanolamine, petroleum sulfonate, etc., as shown in the following table.
