Recently, the digital video research group at the School of Electronic Science and Engineering, National University of Defense Technology, has spent over a decade conducting in-depth research and successfully developed a finger vein feature identification and authentication system. This advanced technology boasts an extremely low false acceptance rate—just one in 100,000—and has already secured five national invention patents, marking a breakthrough that breaks the previous monopoly held by countries like Japan and South Korea. The team is currently fine-tuning the system, with plans to launch it commercially after the Spring Festival.
During a visit to the National Defense University Laboratory, we had the opportunity to experience this cutting-edge vein recognition device. Simply placing your finger into the machine allowed the system to automatically capture and register your unique vein pattern within just 30 seconds. Then, when the same finger was placed back into the device, the door unlocked instantly, showcasing the seamless and rapid authentication process.
According to Xie Jianbin, the project leader, vein recognition is a biometric technology that surpasses traditional fingerprint scanning. It relies on the imaging characteristics of blood vessels under specific lighting conditions, making it a true "live detection" method. This technology not only offers superior security but also opens up broader application possibilities across various industries.
Moreover, the research team has been continuously working on reducing the size of the device to enhance its portability and usability. The reporter observed that the entire system stands at around 6 centimeters tall—roughly the size of a computer mouse—making it highly convenient for everyday use.
Xie Jianbin also shared the future directions of the project. In the next phase, the team will focus on two key areas: first, improving the system’s ability to identify veins under low-visibility conditions, thereby enhancing image clarity and detail; second, advancing the recognition of non-rigid targets, allowing the system to accurately identify fingers even when they are bent or rotated. These upgrades aim to make the technology more versatile and reliable in real-world applications.
