New solar panel film can use infrared light and other invisible light to improve energy transfer

According to foreign media reports, solar panels that are exposed to sunlight all day do not mean that they can capture all the light. In general, solar cells can use visible light to generate energy, but other parts of the electromagnetic spectrum including infrared light are ignored.

In this regard, scientists are carrying out a lot of research work hoping to break this barrier, KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden is one of them. Scientists there have developed a new type of film, which according to their own introduction, can increase the efficiency of solar cells by 25% after being covered on top of solar cells.

It is reported that one of the ways these scientists improve the performance of solar panels is to add special types of nanoparticles on them. By doping these tiny particles into dyes containing metals such as lanthanum ions, it is possible to give them the ability to use other types of light, such as infrared, and then convert them into energy.

The particles developed by KHT Royal Institute of Technology are called Upgrade Nanoparticles (UCNP). The development team said that there is still room for improvement in this technology, because UCNP has a much higher excitation threshold than infrared can provide.

In response to this situation, the team developed a polymer-based array made of a mixture of nanocrystals and a series of microlenses, which can determine the way light enters and improve the performance of UCNP.

As a thin film on top of ordinary solar cells, UCNP can spatially modulate infrared light and focus infrared light in a correct way to greatly improve the efficiency of energy conversion.

Research team leader Hans Agren said: "Without optimization technology, we have increased efficiency by 10%. With a little more work, we estimate that we can achieve an efficiency increase of 20% to 25%."

It is reported that the group has applied for a patent for this technology and published the research results in "Nanoscale".
