The man drunk driving, the old lady abandoned the car, buried the old lady, died, was sentenced to death

On the morning of April 30, 2012, at around 6 o'clock, an elderly woman was tragically knocked down by a drunk driver. Instead of providing immediate medical assistance, the driver chose to bury her alive in an attempt to avoid legal consequences. The case was finally brought to court on the following day, April 31, when the Ningbo Intermediate People's Court delivered its verdict. The defendant, Tao, had been drinking with his girlfriend, Chen, and their friends after a night out. They were driving from Cixi to Xiao Caoyu Town in Yuyao City when they accidentally hit an elderly woman crossing the road. In a panic, Tao first tried to find someone to cover for him, but when that failed, he decided to take the injured woman to the hospital. However, fearing responsibility, he changed his mind. During the journey, Tao, who knew the victim was still alive, made the horrifying decision to abandon her in a remote area and bury her. His girlfriend, Chen, strongly advised him to take her to the hospital, but Tao ignored her pleas. He drove to a construction site in the Economic Development Zone of Yuyao City and buried the unconscious woman in the mud, leading to severe brain damage and suffocation due to foreign body inhalation — ultimately causing her death. After the crime, Tao and Chen fled the scene, abandoning the car. They later traveled to Liupanshui City in Guizhou Province, where Chen rented a house for Tao. According to reports, Tao is 25 years old, from Huayin County, Shaanxi Province, while Chen is also 25 and from Guizhou. Both are described as having no prior criminal records. In its ruling, the court determined that Tao’s actions constituted intentional homicide, as he deliberately caused the victim’s death by burying her alive. Chen, who was aware of the crime and still provided shelter to Tao, was found guilty of harboring a fugitive. As a result, Tao was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve, while Chen received a one-year and six-month prison term. This case has shocked the public and sparked widespread debate about drunk driving and the moral responsibilities of those involved in such incidents. It serves as a grim reminder of the devastating consequences of reckless behavior and the importance of accountability.
