He added that the production of PVC wallpaper involves printing processes that require formaldehyde. As a result, controlling this chemical is crucial. While latex paints often have very low levels of formaldehyde—almost zero—wallpaper cannot avoid it due to the printing and finishing steps involved. From an environmental perspective, latex paint is generally a better option.
Additionally, to improve the durability of wallpaper, manufacturers often add chemicals that reduce breathability. This can lead to problems such as trapped moisture and poor adhesion between the wall and the wallpaper. Unlike latex paint, which has strict standards for moisture content (usually below 9.5%), wallpaper lacks such guidelines. Furthermore, latex paint requires compatibility with the wall's alkalinity, something that isn't always considered with wallpaper.
While paint isn't always 100% eco-friendly, it still outperforms wallpaper in terms of environmental impact. In the Jiangcheng coating market, latex paint accounts for approximately 70% of demand. Even the Beijing Olympic venues opted for Carpoly paint instead of wallpaper, reinforcing the perception that paint is a more sustainable choice.
In traditional consumer views, wall paint remains the top choice for home decoration. Meanwhile, wallpaper tends to appeal more to younger, trend-conscious homeowners who prioritize aesthetics over long-term environmental considerations.
