Double insulated glass
When it comes to windows, glass is always at the center of the conversation. Traditional windows were typically made with single-pane or standard double-glazed glass. However, in recent years, a new type of glass called insulating glass has become more common in China. Originally developed by Americans back in 1865, insulating glass was initially used for military purposes. Compared to regular double-glazed windows, this advanced product offers better thermal insulation, soundproofing, sealing, frost resistance, and dust prevention. In Beijing, regulations now require the use of insulating glass for windows located near roads.
Insulating glass works by sealing two or more panes of glass together, creating a sealed, dry space between them. This space often contains a vacuum-like environment that enhances its performance. The key materials used in manufacturing include aluminum alloy spacers, butyl rubber, polysulfide sealants, and desiccants, which help maintain the integrity and longevity of the unit.
According to experts from Meichi doors and windows, the excellent sealing and thermal insulation properties of insulating glass come from its unique composition. A simple way to check if the insulating glass is of good quality during winter is to look for condensation inside or outside the unit. If there’s visible frost or condensation, it may indicate poor quality. This is because the polysulfide rubber prevents moisture from entering, while the butyl rubber ensures a tight seal between the glass panes. The aluminum spacer also includes a desiccant to absorb any remaining moisture.
On average, the lifespan of insulating glass is around 8 to 10 years. Over time, some moisture may seep in, causing small water droplets to appear. However, this process is usually slow. According to national standards, if moisture appears within five years of installation, the product can still be considered qualified.
Today, several high-end door and window brands such as Merit, Garbo, and Schwell are known for producing reliable insulating glass products. However, some smaller manufacturers may produce inferior versions that simply glue two pieces of glass together without proper sealing. Consumers should be cautious and choose reputable brands to ensure effective insulation during the cold winter months.
