Facing the controversy of the trend of furniture customization

The furniture industry is entering a new era of innovation as the Lunar New Year approaches. Industry insiders highlight that from patchwork to "custom integrated furniture," this shift represents the general trend in the sector. According to a recent survey, only 6.7% of China's custom-made furniture market is currently developed, compared to 70% in European and American countries. This gap is expected to drive an increasing demand for high-quality home life experiences. Over the next five years, China plans to build 36 million affordable housing units, which could lead to a 600 billion yuan custom furniture market growing at an annual rate of 30%. However, despite the promising growth, some consumers are facing challenges with the quality and service of custom furniture. Mr. Guo, for example, expressed his frustration after receiving a set of customized furniture. He found the surfaces extremely dirty, with visible stains and scratches. The metal parts were still sticky with tape, and the strong smell of the furniture was overwhelming. "How can this be considered high-level customization?" he questioned. "Spending a lot of money, but the lack of 'quality' is really disappointing." What made Mr. Guo even more upset was the fact that the furniture was labeled as "non-refundable" due to a clause in the contract he signed. "Customized furniture should be about meeting personal needs, not being 'inhumane' by not allowing returns or exchanges," he said. This issue is not unique to Mr. Guo. Many cities across China are encountering similar disputes over the return policy of custom furniture. A manager from a furniture factory in Xianghe, Hebei, explained that because customized furniture is unique and cannot be resold, manufacturers are usually only responsible for repairs, not returns, unless there's a serious quality issue. However, if the design or measurement errors occur, the responsibility lies with the merchant, and consumers may have the right to return or exchange the product after installation. In recent years, the furniture industry has been moving toward "customized home" solutions. Although there are still many problems to address, terms like "customized and integrated" have become popular in the home design industry. The transition from patchwork to "custom integrated furniture" is now the standard trend in the decoration sector. Before customizing furniture, consumers should be aware of the "unspoken rules," such as "no refund, no change." It's important to inspect the product on-site and be cautious, especially when it comes to online customizations, which carry higher risks. In addition, furniture merchants should clearly define their responsibilities and obligations with customers, setting clear expectations upfront to avoid future disputes.
