Ministry of Agriculture: Domestic Transgenic Rice and Maize Does Not Exist

Recently, Shi Yanquan, deputy director of the Department of Science and Education of the Ministry of Agriculture, said in an interview with the China Network “China Interview” that currently there is no domestically-produced transgenic rice and corn on the market.

Shi Yanquan said that there are two cases of genetically modified products approved by China, one is the use of genetically modified food crops for commercial production, and so far anti-virus bell peppers, storage-resistant tomatoes, and anti-virus papayas have been approved successively. Three, in 2009, also approved safety certificates for transgenic insect-resistant rice and transgenic phytase corn. At present, our country produces and grows, and what we can see on the market is the anti-virus papaya. Bell peppers and tomatoes are no longer produced due to market development, changes in demand, etc., and are not seen in the market. Genetically modified rice and phytase-transgenic corn need to pass the certification of the species, and they need to pass production licenses and business licenses before they can be commercialized. At present, there is no commercial production of transgenic insect-resistant rice and transgenic phytase corn.

Another situation is that China's genetically modified agricultural products used for processing imported raw materials, including soybeans, corn, and rapeseed, will all enter the production chain. Most of them are genetically modified soybeans. The import volume last year was more than 50 million tons. After importing rapeseed and soybeans, Mainly processed mainly for use as edible oil. At present, China has issued five imported GM soybean varieties and 13 varieties of genetically modified corn varieties. The approved safety certificate for the application and import of genetically modified organisms are subject to strict environmental and food safety evaluations. . Safety assessments indicate that these approved and imported GMOs and non-GMOs have the same safety and can be eaten with confidence.

Genetically modified food crop products must be identified when they are sold

Shi Yanquan said that in addition to complying with the laws and regulations applicable to the management of non-GM food crops, the research and application of genetically modified food crops in China must comply with the "Regulations on the Administration of Agricultural Genetically Modified Organisms," and all agricultural genetically modified organisms should be subject to the Regulations. Under the specifications of its supporting regulations, research, testing and production are carried out. For the GMO crop products listed in the scope of the list of genetically modified organisms, they must be identified when they are sold. For example, the genetically modified soybean oil currently on the market is marked.

China's existing regulations can ensure the safety of genetically modified foods

Shi Yanquan said that the State Council has promulgated the “Regulations on the Administration of Agricultural Genetically Modified Organisms,” including five supporting regulations, and established a related regulatory agency for risk management. "We have a safety management committee for genetically modified organisms. These experts are composed of experts from various departments, disciplines, and fields to assess the safety of genetically modified organisms."

Shi Yanquan emphasized that China's laws and regulations on the management of genetically modified foods are very complete. At the same time, the "Food Safety Law" also deals with the management of genetically modified foods. It regulates the production license of foods and other aspects. "Therefore, there is no need to introduce new regulations. Existing regulations can ensure the safety of genetically modified foods."
