Mosaic selection installation
When choosing glass mosaic for ordinary home improvement projects, there are several important factors to consider:
First, if the glass mosaic features patterns like stripes or other decorative elements, these should cover more than 20% of the total area and be evenly distributed. This ensures a balanced and aesthetically pleasing look.
Second, the back of each monolithic glass mosaic should have a textured or stepped groove. This design enhances adhesion and makes the installation more secure when laid on a surface.
Third, it's essential that the adhesive used is strong enough to hold the mosaic in place but also easy to remove from the surface without damaging the backing paper or causing discoloration. A good adhesive should not leave stains or residue behind.
Fourth, under natural light, check the mosaic at a height of about 40 cm. Look closely for any cracks, defects, or missing edges and corners. These issues can affect both the durability and appearance of the finished project.
Fifth, randomly select nine small glass mosaics and arrange them into a square. Place them on a flat surface with sufficient lighting and observe their gloss from a distance of 1.5 meters. If the shine is uneven, the mosaic may fade over time, especially in damp environments like bathrooms, which can damage the overall wall appearance.
Installation Steps – The "Four-Step" Process
Surface Preparation: Before starting the installation, make sure the base surface is clean, smooth, and level. The installation area should be slightly larger than the required thickness of the mosaic by 3–5 mm. Thorough cleaning is crucial before laying the tiles to ensure proper adhesion.
Pre-Laying: Before actual installation, it’s recommended to pre-lay the mosaic according to the construction drawings. For large areas, use a numbering diagram to help with alignment and layout.
Laying the Mosaic: Apply a 2–3 mm layer of adhesive using a serrated trowel onto the base surface. The adhesive thickness should be around 3–5 mm. Align the monolithic mosaic with the grid lines as per the drawing and press it onto the adhesive. Ensure that the gaps between the pieces are consistent with those on each individual tile. Use a flat board and gently tap the mosaic with a rubber mallet to ensure it adheres firmly. If any piece is too high or low, adjust by removing or adding adhesive accordingly.
Grouting: Once the adhesive has dried sufficiently and gained initial strength, apply grout to the gaps using a wooden or rubber spatula. After filling, allow the grout to dry completely before cleaning off any excess. This step helps protect the mosaic and gives the surface a neat, finished look.
