Scientists develop magnetic "nerve" new materials

Recently, a new project funded by the US Army Research Laboratory led by Clemson University and funded by the United States Army Research Laboratory plans to enable vehicles such as helicopters, trucks, and tanks to have a human-like pain system that allows them to perceive different levels of damage.
At the heart of this project is a magnetostrictive material that mimics the changes and effects of humans on magnetic or physical pressures. This material can be sandwiched between several composite materials. If equipped on a vehicle, the system can sense damage such as impact, cracking, and abnormal loads. The corresponding damage report is then sent to the computer for subsequent processing.
Researcher Oliver Myers said: "In this field, we need self-diagnosis capabilities. As Star Trek Lieutenant Data said, 'I'm implementing specific parameters'. We hope our platform can perform at least some specific tasks."
