Solving Wireless Power Compatibility Issues at the University of California Supported by a Transmitter

Researchers at the University of California, San Diego, have developed power transmission coils that can use the 200kHz or 6.78MHz frequency and support a wide variety of wireless power supply standards. Related papers have been published on "IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics." It is said that this coil can use two frequencies at the same time to distinguish the transmission power.

At present, in the wireless power supply technology for portable terminals, the three standards of "Qi", "Powermat", and "Rezence" are competing with each other and are not compatible with each other. Among them, Qi and Powermet use frequency of about 200Hz, and Rezence uses frequency of 6.78MHz, using a power transmission coil can not support all three kinds of standards. The research team of Patrick Mercier, professor of electronics and computer engineering at the University of California, San Diego, stated that they have developed this technology with the goal of achieving "universal wireless chargers" that support all three standards.

The power transmission coil developed this time accommodates two coils of a size of 12.5cm x 8.9cm in a rectangular shape. The large coil faces a 6.78MHz frequency. The small coil faces 200kHz frequency.

According to Mercier et al., the two coils can be driven simultaneously and can simultaneously deliver power to the power receiving coils supporting 6.78 MHz and 200 kHz frequencies.

One of the most important points is to add a filter circuit that prevents the other coil from causing interference and avoiding loss when one of the coils is used to implement the wireless power supply. When actually using two frequencies for power transmission tests, the power transmission efficiency is said to be maintained between 70% and 80%. "It can be seen that even if power is simultaneously supplied to different types of terminals of different types, it is guaranteed that the loss will not be too great" (Mercier).

It is said that Mercier et al. have applied for patents on related technologies, and they are currently recruiting cooperators with practical goals.

Incidentally, from the wireless power supply standard, Qi was created by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC), an industry group of more than 200 companies including Sony, Panasonic, Toshiba, and Roma. Powermat was developed by the Power Matters Alliance (PMA), which was founded by the US-based Powermat Technologies and approximately 70 companies including Broadcom, Kyocera, and TDK. Rezence, under the leadership of Qualcomm and South Korea’s Samsung Electronics, was formed by more than 160 member companies “Alliance For Wireless Power (A4WP)”. At present, Qi and Powermat use electromagnetic induction as the main standard, while Rezence uses magnetic resonance as the main standard.

Among these standards, the industry groups of PMA and A4WP announced in February 2014 that they share mutual standards. And, the two major groups also announced the merger organization in June 2015. The new industry group name is planned to be announced in 2015. However, even if it is a merging organization, there is still no solution to the problem of incompatibility between standards based on different technologies. (Reporter: Nozawa Tetsuo)
