Swedish Sandvik acquires tungsten supplier WBH

Swedish hard alloy producer Sandvik has agreed to acquire tungsten supplier WBH. The acquisition amount has not been announced, and Sandvik said it will complete the acquisition in the second quarter of 2009.

WBH is the Austrian tungsten producer with the full name Wolfram Bergbau- und Hütten-GmbH. WBH's operations in Austria include a tungsten carbide plant and a tungsten chemical recovery plant in St Martin, located at the mine and concentrating plant in Mittersill. WBH achieved a revenue of 1.8 billion Swedish kronor ($209 million) in 2008. After the acquisition, WBH will still operate independently.

Sandvik can obtain tungsten carbide recovery technology from WBH and improve the industrial chain from ore to tungsten carbide powder. In fiscal 2008, Sandvik's operating profit was 12.8 billion Swedish kronor, down 11% year-on-year.
