Hitachi Chemical develops etchable SiN slurry for use in solar cells and other applications

Hitachi Chemical has introduced a novel silicon nitride (SiN) slurry designed for etching, which was showcased at the 12th International Nanotech 2013 event. This innovative paste enables precise removal of SiN only where it is applied, thanks to the screen printing process. The company aims to integrate this material into solar cell and MEMS manufacturing processes, offering a more efficient and controlled alternative. In the production of crystalline silicon solar cells, an anti-reflective SiN layer is typically deposited on the front surface of the cell. After applying silver (Ag) electrodes onto this layer, a "Fire Through" process is usually performed, where the electrodes are bonded to the silicon through high-temperature heating. However, with Hitachi Chemical's new slurry, this high-temperature step can be eliminated, reducing energy consumption and potential damage to the cell. The process begins by screen-printing the slurry onto the targeted area. The slurry is then heated at 170°C for five minutes, during which time it generates an etchant that selectively removes the underlying SiN. Once the etching is complete, the slurry and the etched SiN can be rinsed away with water, leaving a clean surface ready for Ag electrode application. This allows direct contact between the Ag electrode and the silicon cell without the need for thermal bonding. Currently, the slurry supports a line width of approximately 100 micrometers and can etch SiN up to 100 nanometers deep. Looking ahead, Hitachi Chemical plans to further refine the technology based on industry demand, including potential improvements in resolution and etch depth. The goal is to provide a versatile, cost-effective solution that meets the evolving needs of solar cell manufacturers and other advanced manufacturing sectors.
