"Internet of Things Detection Technology" Helps Exploit Hazard of Oil and Gas Pipeline

Recently, the Nanjing Municipal Security Committee announced the findings from the first phase of inspections targeting the city's oil and gas long-distance pipelines, industrial pipelines, pressure pipelines, and gas pipelines. A total of 710 key safety hazards were identified, including aging pipeline equipment and external threats such as unauthorized construction and damage. Many oil and gas pipelines have become high-risk areas due to issues like destruction, illegal occupation, and improper maintenance. According to an official from the Nanjing Safety Supervision Bureau, this year, petrochemical companies will implement Internet of Things (IoT) technology to monitor the real-time condition of underground pipelines, making potential safety risks more visible and manageable.
During a demonstration, a technician showed reporters a three-dimensional animation generated by the city's digital underground engineering software. The presentation illustrated how the IoT-based detection system can identify hidden dangers in underground oil and gas pipelines. On the screen, the pipelines, valves, oil pumps, and joints of a local petrochemical company appeared clearly. "This image is captured through IoT sensors," the technician explained. "If there are any safety risks, not only can we detect oil or air leaks, but also determine the size and exact location of the problem."
Most underground oil and gas pipelines operate continuously, and with IoT sensors installed, real-time data can be collected and transmitted back to the control room via fiber-optic and microwave communication networks. This allows for round-the-clock visual monitoring. Additionally, GPS and GIS technologies help display the surrounding environment of the pipeline, reducing the risk of accidental damage during emergency repairs.
"Thanks to this IoT detection system, we can precisely locate pipeline leaks," said representatives from several petrochemical companies in Nanjing. They have plans to install the system on newly constructed underground pipelines this year, aiming to prevent incidents before they occur. The system has already passed tests conducted by the provincial software testing center. (Nanjing Daily)
