China's aluminum alloy cable promotion urgently needs to establish a unified national standard

In 2006, when U.S. General Cable entered the Chinese market, it began a long journey of exploration and adaptation. According to Tan Bingwen, President of U.S. General Cable (China), one of the most significant challenges the company faced was the issue of standardization. Speaking in an interview at the end of August, Tan highlighted that the lack of clear and consistent standards has been a major hurdle in the adoption of aluminum alloy cables in China. Aluminum alloy cables, which General Cable developed over 50 years ago, have been widely used abroad for more than half a century. However, in China, the standards for these products are still not fully established. Some companies even use pure aluminum instead of the proper aluminum alloy, leading to confusion among consumers and professionals alike. This misunderstanding has resulted in repeated issues in the market, where the quality and safety of cables are often compromised. With the increasing scarcity of copper resources and the sustained high cost of copper in recent years, aluminum alloy cables have started to gain more attention in China. Despite this growing interest, several obstacles remain in their widespread adoption. One of the main problems is the absence of a unified national standard. Currently, most manufacturers rely on GB/T 12706-2008, a standard originally designed for traditional power cables. This standard lacks specific requirements for aluminum alloy conductors, making it difficult for manufacturers to meet performance expectations during production, testing, and application. Moreover, some unscrupulous manufacturers are selling counterfeit aluminum alloy cables made from pure aluminum, which can pose serious safety risks to construction projects and end-users. These practices not only undermine consumer trust but also create chaos in the cable market. China holds the world's largest cable market, accounting for approximately 35% of global demand. As society continues to develop, the need for aluminum alloy cables is expected to grow steadily. If the key challenge—lack of a unified national standard—can be addressed, the potential for aluminum alloy cables in China will be vast, leading to greater innovation, efficiency, and safer infrastructure across the country.
