China's aluminum alloy cable promotion urgently needs to establish a unified national standard

"Since entering the Chinese market in 2006, U.S. General Cable has been continuously exploring and adapting to local conditions. One of the biggest challenges it has faced is the issue of standardization," said Tam Bingwen, President of U.S. General Cable (China), during an interview with the media at the end of August. Tan Bingwen explained that General Cable has been using aluminum alloy cables for over 50 years, with successful applications abroad for decades. However, in China, the standards for aluminum alloy cables are still not well-established. Some companies even use pure aluminum instead of proper aluminum alloys, leading to confusion and safety concerns. This lack of understanding has caused repeated issues in the industry. In recent years, as China faces a growing shortage of copper resources and high copper prices persist, aluminum alloy cables have gained more attention. Despite this, their adoption remains limited due to several challenges. The main one is the absence of a unified national standard. Currently, most manufacturers follow GB/T12706-2008, which was originally designed for copper cables and lacks specific requirements for aluminum alloy conductors. This creates difficulties in production, testing, and application. Moreover, some unscrupulous manufacturers are selling counterfeit aluminum alloy cables made from pure aluminum, posing serious safety risks and creating market confusion. These practices undermine consumer confidence and slow down the development of the aluminum alloy cable industry. With the world's largest cable market, accounting for around 35% of global demand, China presents a huge opportunity for aluminum alloy cables. As society continues to develop and environmental awareness grows, the demand for these energy-efficient cables is expected to rise. If the issue of standardization can be resolved, aluminum alloy cables could see significant growth in the coming years, offering a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to traditional copper cables.
