In May this year, a piece of glass inside the Palace Museum at the Forbidden City was shattered by a tourist, causing damage to cultural relics. On June 29, the director of the Palace Museum, Shan Yuxiang, announced that the glass used for displaying artifacts on the windows of the Forbidden City’s palaces will soon be replaced with anti-shatter glass.
"The sledgehammer cannot break this glass," he emphasized.
The incident occurred on May 4th in the Qiankun Palace, located along the western inner road of the Forbidden City. A male tourist manually smashed a window glass in the original exhibition room of the main hall, causing a Qing Dynasty bronze-plated transfer water watch—classified as a secondary national cultural relic—to fall and get damaged. The artifact is currently undergoing restoration and will be reintroduced to the public soon.
Shan Yuxiang revealed that over the next year, all glass displays on the windows of the East and West Palaces will be replaced with flood-resistant materials. These new glasses are designed to withstand impacts from tools like sledgehammers. A total of more than 100 pieces will be replaced, and the plan has already been finalized. Tendering procedures are now underway.
In addition to reinforcing the window frames for protection, the original glass and frames are considered cultural relics themselves. Therefore, the old glass will be carefully stored as historical data. Each piece will be numbered and documented, including details such as which specific glass was in which palace. "There may be a possibility of restoring it in the future," Shan noted.
Regarding the replacement process, Shan explained that since the window frames are also cultural relics, both the glass and the frames must be made tamper-proof. The frames will also need reinforcement during the installation of the new flood-resistant glass.
Beyond the window glass replacements for cultural relics, other windows will remain unchanged. "Our priority is to preserve the original condition of the artifacts as much as possible," Shan said. "After all, the glass itself is a cultural relic, and many of them date back to the Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China era."
