Tile radiation cancer cause exaggeration of facts can not be trusted

Since 2009, the myth that "tiles emit radiation" and "tiles cause cancer" has spread widely. In response, the AQSIQ conducted a sampling inspection across eight provinces, including Hebei, involving 272 ceramic tile manufacturers and 364 products. The results showed that three types of products failed to meet the "radioactive radionuclide limit" standards. Scientific research confirms that long-term exposure to high levels of ionizing radiation can be harmful, but the reality is far less alarming. According to Hu Yunlin, a senior engineer at the National Building Material Testing Center's Ceramics and Stone Inspection Department, adding a small amount of zirconium silicate during the production of porcelain is a common and well-established practice in China, with over a decade of use. He emphasized that the radioactivity level in ceramic tiles is extremely low. In fact, the annual radiation exposure from a normal home environment is much lower than a single X-ray scan, so there’s no need for concern. Wang Bo, deputy secretary-general of the National Building Sanitary Ceramics Standardization Technical Committee, added that the radiation effect of ceramic tiles is even less than the radiation from talking on a mobile phone for just one minute. But is excessive zirconium silicate commonly used? Hu Yunlin clarified that such cases are rare. He explained that most companies are profit-driven, and since zirconium silicate is expensive, many small producers avoid it. Large enterprises strictly control its usage, making overuse uncommon. However, he noted that China currently lacks a specific standard for zirconium silicate usage, and the radionuclide content varies between batches, making regulation challenging. Hu also reminded readers that natural background radiation exists everywhere, and it doesn’t pose any health risk as long as the tiles pass quality tests. “We live in a world with some level of radiation,” he said, “but it’s not dangerous unless it reaches harmful levels over time.” In reality, radioactivity is everywhere—found in stone, metal, and even in everyday devices like computers and cell phones. Despite this, ceramic tiles have never been linked to health issues. In major ceramic-producing regions like Foshan, Jingdezhen, and Tangshan, no workers have reported health problems due to prolonged exposure to ceramics. Looking at the testing standard, "Radionuclides for Construction Materials," the limits set are very low compared to natural sources. Even radioactive stones are allowed for use, so ceramic tiles, which have much lower levels, are safe. This standard was introduced by the industry itself for self-regulation. Interestingly, foreign countries don’t impose similar restrictions, and some international brands have even raised concerns about it being a trade barrier when exporting to China. Experts have repeatedly pointed out that there is no medical evidence linking sanitary ceramic products to cancer. As Chen Guowei, a representative from St. Augustine Ceramics in Italy, explained, European and global standards do not require radiation testing for ceramic tiles, as it is considered a basic industry norm. The question remains: is there a safer alternative to zirconium silicate? Liang Yiliu, director of the Guangdong Provincial Technical Supervision Quality Supervision and Inspection Station, mentioned that high-brightness whitening mud can achieve the same effect as zirconium silicate but at a higher cost. Therefore, he advised consumers not to prioritize whiteness when buying tiles and instead consider more natural tones like yellow or gray. From "tile cancer" to "white tile cancer," the topic of radiation in ceramic tiles keeps resurfacing. Part of the issue lies in public misunderstanding of what radiation really means. Many people lack knowledge about the ceramic industry, leading to exaggerated fears. Additionally, some professionals in design and sales have been influenced by these myths, which could be driven by interest groups seeking unfair competition. To address this, both industry practitioners and media have a responsibility to educate the public and promote accurate information. Only through better understanding can we move past misinformation and ensure informed consumer choices.
