UT Wien engineering team wants to build a solar power plant Heliofloat

Ocean-based wind/tidal power stations have become a convenient means of energy acquisition in some countries. So why not build solar power stations at sea? The engineering team from the Technical University of Vienna envisages the construction of a new type of offshore solar power station system, Heliofloat, with a length of 100 meters, similar to the drilling platform's use of flexible and open bottoms to float on the sea.

As one of the sustainable energy sources, solar energy is considered to be one of the breakthroughs in solving global energy problems. However, not enough land is one of the key factors that restrict its development. The floating offshore power station seems to be one of the future development directions, but there are also some problems, such as how to effectively resist the waves and tidal flows, and whether it can survive in harsh environments such as storms.

In any case, offshore solar panels are a risky investment, but the Vienna Technical University team stated that the Heliofloat system has a football-size panel space and is stabilized in the ocean by a flexible open bottom cylinder.
