Water-based paint will welcome rapid development

In recent years, with the increasing emphasis on environmental protection, traditional paints that are harmful and polluting are facing a major transformation. As governments around the world implement stricter regulations, the industry is shifting towards more sustainable options like water-based paints. These eco-friendly alternatives are not only in line with global green trends but also represent the future of the paint market. With the introduction of new environmental laws and policies, such as the "National Standard for Waterborne Coatings" implemented in 2014, the development of green coatings has gained significant momentum.
The introduction of the "paint consumption tax" further accelerated the shift toward environmentally friendly products. As penalties for pollution become harsher and more flexible, companies using traditional solvent-based paints are under growing pressure to change. This has led to a wave of industrial consolidation, where smaller manufacturers struggle to compete due to rising compliance costs and limited resources. Meanwhile, large enterprises with strong R&D capabilities are better positioned to adapt and lead the transition.
Currently, China's annual coating production reaches nearly 13 million tons, yet less than 50% of this is environmentally friendly. In contrast, countries in Europe and America have already adopted water-based coatings at a much higher rate—up to 70%-80%. In the architectural coatings sector, which makes up 45% of the market, water-based paints dominate, accounting for 90% of the segment, while powder coatings take up about 8%. Traditional paints, known for their high volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions, have been largely phased out in developed markets. For instance, the EU banned solvent-based paints entirely from 2004 onward, pushing the industry toward safer, greener alternatives.
Water-based paints use water as a diluent instead of toxic solvents, significantly reducing harmful emissions. Their VOC content is 60%-70% lower than that of oil-based paints, making them a key solution for improving air quality and supporting environmental governance. As national policies continue to support the adoption of water-based coatings, consumer awareness and acceptance must also grow. It’s essential for the industry to maintain a clean and competitive market environment, ensuring that high-quality products and reliable services drive the growth of eco-friendly paints.
Gong Yufei, General Manager of Boddin Waterborne Coatings, noted that the demand for water-based paints is developing faster than expected. To sustain this growth, strong technical support and professional service are crucial. Providing reliable guidance and maintaining a healthy market environment will help furniture manufacturers and distributors embrace water-based wood coatings more readily, ensuring long-term success for the green paint industry in China.
