I recently experienced a costly mistake while trying to clean my wooden floor. The price of wood flooring is quite high, and I didn’t know much about its proper maintenance. I was cleaning it blindly, which ended up damaging the surface. After using water to wipe the floor, it became dull and gray, and after prolonged scrubbing, the original finish was seriously damaged. Now, I’ve realized that maintaining a wooden floor is extremely important.
**How to clean wooden floors?**
When cleaning, start by sweeping or vacuuming the floor to remove dust. Then, mix the appropriate amount of floor cleaner with water in a bucket, based on the level of dirt. Use a mop to go from the inside of the room toward the door, making sure to wring out the mop as much as possible. Excess moisture can seep into the wood and cause mold or rot. For hard-to-reach areas like seams or corners, use an old toothbrush dipped in the cleaner, or apply the solution directly onto a cloth and wipe carefully. Some cleaners are highly concentrated, so after cleaning, the floor may attract more dust if not dried properly. It’s best to choose a quality product for better results.
If you want your floor to stay shiny, applying a layer of wood floor wax after cleaning is recommended. However, make sure the floor is completely dry before waxing, otherwise, the wax might not adhere well and could leave white spots.
**Moisture control during the rainy season**
High humidity and temperature can cause wooden floors to swell or warp. During this season, it's essential to manage moisture and prevent pests. In one case, termites were found coming from the floor, but it wasn't necessarily due to the floor itself. Many people focus on the quality of the floor, but they often neglect the wooden base beneath. If the wooden base has too much moisture or hasn't been treated against insects, it can lead to problems. If termites are found, it's important to treat the issue immediately to avoid further damage.
**Preventing and repairing small cracks**
Regular oiling and waxing help prevent dry cracks and maintain the floor’s appearance. It's also important to protect the floor from scratches. Install the wooden floor at the end of your renovation to avoid accidental damage during construction. After installation, apply a layer of wax or oil to create a protective barrier. If the floor gets scratched, a small amount of wax can be used to fill in the scratch and restore its look.
By taking these steps, you can keep your wooden floor looking beautiful and extend its lifespan. Proper care is key to avoiding expensive repairs down the line.
