High-pressure cylinders and bottle valves are essential components in various applications, particularly in gas storage and transportation. Carbon fiber composite cylinders typically consist of an aluminum alloy liner, surrounded by layers of carbon fiber, glass fiber, and epoxy resin. The inner liner, such as the CFR178.463 model, is manufactured according to U.S. Department of Transportation standards and undergoes rigorous testing, including checks for thickness, straightness, concentricity, surface finish, and hardness. The main winding layer is made of filament carbon fiber, while the outer layer includes glass fiber and epoxy resin to enhance impact resistance and wear performance.
When inspecting these cylinders, damage is categorized into different levels. A shallow injury reaches only the resin layer, while a Grade 2 damage involves scratches that penetrate to the glass fiber, with a depth less than 0.25 mm. This type of damage can be repaired using a specialized resin. However, Grade 3 damage—such as deep scratches (over 0.25 mm, appearing dark grey), strong acid or alkali corrosion, or scratches extending more than three-quarters of the cylinder’s length—is considered unacceptable and results in rejection.
The cylinder valve controls the opening and closing of the high-pressure cylinder through a handwheel. According to EN-137 and GA-124 standards, the handwheel must have a design that prevents accidental closure, ensuring safe operation. The outlet of the valve is typically a G5/8 female thread, which allows for secure connections. There are three main types of cylinder valves based on their shape: vertical, horizontal, and side-mounted. Each type is suited for different installation environments and usage scenarios.
In addition, many cylinder valves are equipped with a safety diaphragm that automatically releases pressure when it exceeds 40–42 MPa. This feature helps prevent catastrophic failure due to overpressure, reducing the risk of explosions and potential injuries.
