Analysis of Chinese Patent Application in the Field of Progressive Die
Progressive dies, also known as continuous dies, are a type of cold stamping die that consists of multiple stations. Each station performs a different operation in sequence, allowing a series of stamping processes to be completed in a single press stroke. Due to their complex structure and high precision requirements, progressive dies are considered one of the most challenging molds in the cold die industry.
The advantages of progressive dies include high production efficiency, ease of operation, long service life, consistent product quality, and cost-effectiveness. These benefits have led to their widespread adoption in manufacturing. In the cold die sector, progressive dies make up approximately 27% of all applications.
I. Analysis of Chinese Patent Applications for Progressive Dies
To better understand the patent landscape for progressive dies in China, the author collected relevant data from the Chinese Patent Database (CNPAT) and conducted an in-depth analysis.
1. Types of Patents
The first patent application for a progressive die was filed in 1988. Since then, a total of 320 related patent applications have been disclosed, including 109 invention patents, 206 utility model patents, and 5 design patents (see Figure 1). This variety reflects the ongoing innovation and development in this field.
2. Annual Trends in Patent Applications
An annual analysis of the 320 patents based on their filing dates shows that before 2009, the number of applications was relatively low. However, starting in 2009, there was a significant increase in patent filings. It is worth noting that due to the typical 18-month delay between application and publication, some applications from 2012 and 2013 may still be pending disclosure.
3. Analysis of Applicants
Among the applicants, the top three companies are Kunshan Jizhicheng Mould Co., Ltd. with 16 applications, Ningbo Zhenyu Mould Co., Ltd. with 10, and Kunshan Liante Precision Machinery Co., Ltd. with 6. Ante (Suzhou) Precision Machinery also submitted 6 applications. The remaining applicants include various enterprises, universities, and research institutions, with 23 individual applicants representing about 7% of the total.
