Analysis of Chinese Patent Application in the Field of Progressive Die

Progressive dies, also known as continuous dies, are a type of cold stamping tool that consists of multiple workstations. Each station performs a different operation in sequence, allowing a series of stamping processes to be completed in a single press stroke. Due to their complex structure and high precision requirements, the design of progressive dies is challenging and demands advanced engineering expertise.

These molds offer several advantages, such as high production efficiency, safe and easy operation, long service life, consistent product quality, and lower manufacturing costs. Because of these benefits, progressive dies have gained widespread use in the manufacturing industry. Within the field of cold dies, they account for approximately 27% of all applications.

I. Analysis of Chinese Patent Applications for Progressive Dies

To better understand the development and innovation trends in progressive die technology in China, the author analyzed relevant patent data from the Chinese Patent Database (CNPAT). The following insights were gathered from this study.

1. Types of Patents

The first patent application related to progressive dies was published in 1988. Since then, a total of 320 patent applications have been disclosed, including 109 invention patents, 206 utility model patents, and 5 design patents (see Figure 1). This variety reflects the diverse innovations and improvements made in the field over the years.

2. Annual Trends in Patent Applications

An annual analysis of the 320 patents based on their filing dates shows a gradual increase before 2009, followed by a significant rise after that year (see attached table). It's important to note that there is often a delay between the filing date and the public disclosure of an invention patent—typically around 18 months. As a result, some applications filed between 2012 and 2013 may still be pending or not yet published.

3. Key Applicants

When analyzing the applicants, it was found that the top three entities were Kunshan Jizhicheng Mould Co., Ltd. (with 16 applications), Ningbo Zhenyu Mould Co., Ltd. (with 10 applications), and Kunshan Liante Precision Machinery Co., Ltd. (with 6 applications). Another company, Ante (Suzhou) Precision Machinery, also contributed 6 applications. Most of the remaining applicants are companies, universities, or research institutions, with 23 individual applicants representing about 7% of the total.
