In the recent announcement by the Technical Committee for Water Products and Appliances under the National Technical Committee for Industrial Water-Saving Standardization, it was revealed that a five-year annual meeting of the Water Efficiency Subcommittee will be held in Shunde, Foshan, on November 28. This event marks an important step in preparing for the next session of the committee. During the meeting, discussions will focus on the draft version of the "Administrative Measures on Water Efficiency Standards" and the upcoming IPC-2012 standard, which is set to take effect in 2014 for plumbing sanitary products. Additionally, the conference will address key issues such as lead-free standards and export certification requirements, which are of great concern to both manufacturers and consumers.
Currently, domestic water-saving standards for sanitary products have been largely established. According to national regulations, water outlets sold in the domestic market must comply with GB18145-2003 for ceramic sealing taps and toilet water consumption, following GB6952-2005 "Sanitary Ceramics." The standard specifies that regular toilets should consume no more than 9 liters, while water-saving models should not exceed 6 liters per flush. Moreover, the maximum water usage for any toilet should not go beyond 1.5 liters.
From the perspective of water efficiency standards applied by sanitary ware companies, the latest regulations in the industry include GB25501-2010, which outlines the water use efficiency levels for water nozzles, and GB25502-2010, which sets the water efficiency limits and ratings for toilets. These standards define different efficiency grades and specify flow rate thresholds that products must meet.
Under GB25501-2010, water nozzle efficiency is divided into three levels, with the highest limit value at 0.150 L/s and the water-saving evaluation at 0.125 L/s. This means that spouts exceeding 0.150 L/s would be considered non-compliant, while those below 0.125 L/s qualify as water-saving fixtures. Similarly, GB25502-2010 categorizes toilet water efficiency into five levels, with specific criteria for single and double flush systems.
Experts from the National Center for Testing and Qualification of Water Drainage and Water Saving Equipment emphasize that achieving Grade 2 water efficiency requires optimized internal design and proper selection of components like bubblers. Most major brands already meet these standards due to mature production technologies.
As the bathroom industry moves toward international alignment, many leading brands now promote water-saving and energy-efficient products. However, some businesses lack clarity on the actual features of their products, often citing vague "water-saving certifications." This has led to concerns about misleading claims and "pseudo-water-saving" products in the market.
Recent inspections have shown that water quality standards for bathroom products are often unsatisfactory. Industry experts suggest that stricter enforcement and clear audit standards are needed to prevent false labeling. Until official water efficiency labeling rules are implemented, manufacturers should clearly indicate product flow rates and efficiency ratings on packaging.
Consumers can make informed choices by checking the rated water use efficiency level and flow rate on product manuals or packaging. Selecting high-efficiency products ensures better performance and sustainability.
With growing awareness, especially after the lead contamination incident in faucets this year, there is a stronger push for international standards in the sanitary industry. As technology advances, aligning with European and American standards is becoming increasingly feasible.
Looking ahead, the implementation of new standards, including those for heavy metal content and the IPC-2012 regulations, is expected to further strengthen the industry's compliance and global competitiveness.
