Have you ever noticed that your wooden floor has started to blister, even though you didn’t spill any water on it? It can be quite frustrating and unsightly. While it's common for floors to blister due to water exposure—like when you accidentally splash water or during heavy rain—it’s also possible for blisters to appear without any obvious source of moisture. So why does this happen?
There are two main types of floor blistering: edge blisters and surface blisters. Edge blisters appear as oval-shaped bulges along the edges of the floorboards. These can occur individually or in clusters, sometimes connecting to form larger sections. They tend to be scattered throughout the room, creating an uneven look. Surface blisters, on the other hand, appear as raised bumps directly on the top layer of the floorboard. Like edge blisters, they are irregularly distributed and can significantly impact both the appearance and longevity of your flooring.
So what causes these blisters? Here are a few key reasons:
1. **Uneven or dirty subfloor**: Before installing laminate flooring, it's essential to ensure the ground is clean and smooth. If there are small particles of sand or debris on the floor, or if the surface is too rough, it can damage the moisture barrier during installation. This can lead to moisture from the ground seeping into the floor, causing it to blister over time.
2. **Poor moisture protection**: Inadequate waterproofing during installation is another major cause. If the damp-proof membrane isn't properly sealed with waterproof tape, or if the balance layer on the back of the floor isn't broken down correctly, moisture can still penetrate the floor, leading to swelling and blistering.
3. **Improper use or maintenance**: Sometimes, blisters are caused by user error. For example, if water accumulates between the floorboards due to improper cleaning or leaks (such as from heating systems or large puddles), it can lead to blistering. This is often a result of poor maintenance rather than a product defect.
To prevent these issues, it's important to take some simple precautions. Avoid letting large amounts of water pool on the floor, especially in high-traffic areas. During rainy seasons, keep windows closed to avoid moisture entering the home. When cleaning, use a vacuum or a semi-dry mop instead of a wet one. If water spills on the floor, wipe it up immediately to prevent it from seeping into the joints.
A comfortable and beautiful home requires not only quality materials but also proper care and attention. By being mindful of how you maintain your floors, you can extend their lifespan and keep them looking great for years to come.
