**Thrust Needle Roller Bearings – Part 3** Home > Bearing Knowledge > Bearing Information (3) **Bearing Information (3)** Source: China Bearing Network | Time: June 24, 2013 --- Thrust needle roller bearings are composed of a raceway ring, needle rollers, and a cage assembly. These bearings can be paired with thin stamped rings (W) or thick machined rings (WS). The bearing structure consists of a precision-stamped raceway ring combined with needle rollers and a cage. This type of bearing is designed to handle unidirectional axial loads and is commonly used in compact applications where space is limited. The cage, typically made from steel stamping or synthetic resin molding, plays a key role in guiding the needle rollers and maintaining their alignment. These bearings are widely used in automotive, agricultural, and machine tool applications. They feature truncated rollers with a spherical surface at the large end, which are precisely guided by the raceway's rim (shaft or housing). Unidirectional thrust bearings allow for one-way axial load capacity, while bidirectional bearings can support loads in both directions. In bidirectional designs, a central ring is used in conjunction with the shaft. However, since clearance fits are often employed, an additional component such as a sleeve may be necessary to axially position the central ring. Copper alloy-cut bearings are primarily used in heavy-duty applications. Unidirectional versions are common in crane hooks and oil rig rotary rings, while bidirectional types are found in rolling mill roll necks. Spherical roller thrust bearings use obliquely placed spherical rollers on a curved raceway surface, allowing for self-alignment. This design enables the bearing to accommodate significant misalignment and handle both axial and radial loads simultaneously. Common applications include hydroelectric generators, vertical motors, ship propeller shafts, rolling mill reducers, tower cranes, coal mills, extruders, and forming machines. --- **Related Bearing Knowledge:** - Common Faults in Rolling Bearings - Disassembly and Assembly of Spherical Bearings - Tips for Working with Bearing Rings - Cold Heading Techniques for Bearing Components - NTN Bearing Steel Quality and Gas-Quenched Bearings --- This article is sourced from [China Bearing Network](http://www.chinabearing.net).
