Bone carving collection maintenance method

Bone carvings are traditionally made from animal bones such as cattle, camel, and ivory (now banned). These works are crafted from organic materials and often feature intricate designs, sometimes resembling flowers. The craftsmanship emphasizes delicacy, transparency, and fragility. Bone carvings are highly sensitive to environmental factors—easily damaged by falling, squeezing, impact, fire, water, wind in dry climates, and oxidation. According to Li Fangyuan, proper daily care is essential for preserving these delicate pieces, including dusting, UV protection, waterproofing, and pest control. First, the materials used in bone carvings are primarily composed of calcium phosphate and organic substances. These materials are temperature-sensitive, prone to expansion and contraction, which can lead to deformation, cracking, or chipping. Especially during winter, when temperatures fluctuate and the air is dry, special attention is needed. Ideally, the storage environment should be maintained between 15°C and 25°C. Exposure to light, particularly ultraviolet rays, can cause discoloration and brittleness. Infrared and visible light can also raise the temperature, so it's crucial to keep bone carvings away from direct sunlight. Second, bone carvings are highly sensitive to humidity. They naturally contain moisture and can absorb or release it depending on the surrounding conditions, leading to swelling or shrinking, which may result in cracks or warping. The ideal humidity level for storing bone carvings is between 55% and 60%. For larger items, a glass cover with a small cup of water inside can help maintain a stable environment. It’s important to avoid placing them in well-ventilated areas, as this can accelerate drying and damage. Third, protecting against pests is vital. A small amount of anti-mite powder can be placed in a soft capsule near the collection. If dust accumulates, gently brush it off. If mildew appears due to improper care, it should be removed promptly. Professional treatment involves washing with a diluted citric or oxalic acid solution, rinsing with distilled water, neutralizing with ammonia, and finally drying with a clean cloth. Always allow the piece to dry slowly in the shade. Fourth, if a bone carving is cracked, avoid washing it. Instead, use a solution of white alcohol or trichloroethane with 1% soap for surface cleaning. Once the solution evaporates, wipe off any remaining soap with a solvent and re-wax the surface. Polishing is recommended afterward. If chemical cleaning isn't available, there are simpler methods. For oil or stubborn dirt, gently scrub with warm soapy water without soaking. A toothbrush and toothpaste can also be used, but only for a short time, and the item should be dried immediately to prevent damage. Avoid using harsh chemicals like rubbing alcohol, as they can dull the surface and darken the color. Generally, old bone carvings don’t need frequent washing. Applying wax and wiping off excess with a fine cotton cloth is sufficient for maintenance.
