Jiulixiang breeding method
Jiulixiang Breeding Method:
1. The seeds are collected from ripe, bright red fruits. They are soaked in clean water to remove the peel, impurities, and any floating particles. After drying, they can be used for planting. Jiulixiang is typically sown in spring or autumn. Spring sowing is usually done between March and April, with May also being an option. When the temperature ranges between 16-22°C, germination occurs within 25 to 35 days after sowing. Autumn sowing is ideal from early September to October. Before planting, choose a well-fertilized and well-watered plot. Prepare the nursery by deep plowing, breaking up the soil, and leveling it. The bed width should be 1 to 1.2 meters. Both broadcasting and row sowing methods can be used. The rows should be spaced 30 cm apart. Mix the seeds with fine sand and spread them evenly on the seedbed. Cover the seeds with a 1.2 cm layer of soil, then cover with grass and water thoroughly. Once the seedlings emerge, remove the grass promptly. When the seedlings have 2 to 3 true leaves, thin them out to 10-15 cm apart. During weeding, apply organic manure, and keep the seedlings at a height of 15-20 cm.
2. For cutting propagation, it's best to do this in spring or during the rainy season between July and August. Select branches that are over one year old, fully mature, and have a gray-green bark. Avoid using the tender shoots of the current year. Cut the branches into 10-15 cm sections, each containing 4-5 nodes. Make sure the cuts are flat and insert them diagonally into the seedbed. A layer of clean river sand can be sprinkled on top of the seedbed. The spacing between rows should be 12 cm × 9 cm, and the soil should remain moist. Seedlings from spring sowing can be planted in the same year, while those from autumn sowing are usually planted the following year.
3. Layering is commonly done during the rainy season. A portion of semi-mature branches is buried in the soil through ring-barking or cutting, allowing roots to form. Once rooted, the plant can be separated and planted in late autumn or the following spring.
