Chinese and foreign scientists developed proton conducting membranes to make fuel cells more efficient

A joint effort by Chinese and foreign scientists has recently reached the headline of the “Nature” website: Graphene, boron nitride, and other two-dimensional nanomaterials have the property of allowing only protons to pass through, which is expected to replace the core components of fuel cells.” The existing materials of proton-conducting membranes have revolutionized the development of fuel cells.

This achievement was accomplished by Professor Wu Hengan from the University of Science and Technology of China, Wang Fengchao, Associate Fellow and Nobel Prize-winner of physics, Professor Andre Heim of the University of Manchester, UK, and researchers from the Nijmegen University of the Netherlands.

The fuel cell is a power generation device that directly converts the chemical energy contained in the fuel into electric energy, and has many advantages such as high energy conversion efficiency, no need for charging time, zero emission and no pollution, and the application prospect is very broad. However, the presence of fuel infiltration and other defects in the "proton-conducting membrane", the core component of the fuel cell, greatly limits its large-scale application.

According to Wu Heng'an, the traditional view is that any gas molecule or fluid molecule cannot penetrate flawless perfect graphene sheets. Their research shows that protons can easily cross two-dimensional materials such as graphene and boron nitride. If the temperature is increased or the catalyst is added, the penetration process will be significantly faster. Based on this research result, single-atomic-layer two-dimensional materials such as graphene and boron nitride can be used as "proton-conducting membranes," which will make fuel cells more efficient, safer, more environmentally friendly, and thinner.
