However, during the initial phase of metering, there was a vacuum process causing negative pressure, which led to concerns about reverse metering. The customer reported that this situation might result in inaccurate readings or even reversed measurements. In response to this concern, we conducted a thorough technical discussion with our engineers. Here are the key findings: First, from a theoretical perspective, the liquid turbine flowmeter works by allowing fluid to pass through the sensor housing. The blades of the impeller are angled relative to the flow direction, so as the fluid moves, it exerts a rotational force on the blades. After overcoming friction and resistance, the impeller reaches a stable speed, which is proportional to the flow rate under certain conditions. The rotating blade, being magnetically conductive, cuts through the magnetic field created by a permanent magnet and coil. This induces an electric pulse signal, which is then amplified and converted into a rectangular pulse wave. This signal can be displayed on a monitoring instrument, showing either the instantaneous or total flow. Importantly, unlike electromagnetic or ultrasonic flowmeters, which can detect both flow rate and direction, the liquid turbine flowmeter only detects a pulse signal. It does not differentiate between forward and reverse flow, meaning it cannot display negative values. Second, the design of the turbine's impeller is symmetrical on both sides. While similar in principle to a household fan, the turbine flowmeter has a different structure. Regardless of whether the fluid flows in the forward or reverse direction, the impeller will rotate and generate a signal. The design of the bearing and fixed components ensures minimal differences in performance regardless of flow direction. Third, while the theoretical basis supports the functionality of the flowmeter, real-world applications may present challenges. If reverse flow occurs frequently, it could affect the accuracy of forward measurements and reduce the device’s lifespan. Additionally, cumulative reverse readings could complicate metering processes. Fourth, to prevent such issues, we recommend installing a check valve at the outlet of the pipeline to avoid backflow.
