Tile radiation cancer cause exaggeration of facts can not be trusted

Since 2009, rumors have circulated that ceramic tiles emit radiation and can cause cancer. These claims gained traction, leading to widespread public concern. However, the National Quality Supervision and Inspection Center for Building Materials conducted a sampling inspection across eight provinces, including Hebei, involving 272 ceramic tile manufacturers and 364 products. The results showed that only three products failed to meet the "radioactive radionuclide limit" standards. Scientific research indicates that long-term exposure to high levels of ionizing radiation may pose health risks, but in reality, the radiation emitted by ceramic tiles is extremely low. Hu Yunlin, a senior engineer from the Ceramics and Stone Inspection Department at the National Building Material Testing Center, explained that zirconium silicate is commonly used in modern tile production, with a history of over ten years in China. The technology is well-established, and its use is strictly controlled by major manufacturers. “The amount of radiation absorbed from ceramic tiles in a normal home environment over a year is far less than what you receive during a single X-ray,” he said. Additionally, Wang Bo, deputy secretary-general of the National Building Sanitary Ceramics Standardization Technical Committee, noted that the radiation from tiles is even less than that from a one-minute phone call. Hu also pointed out that excessive use of zirconium silicate is rare. “Most companies are profit-driven, and since zirconium silicate is expensive, many small producers avoid it. Large enterprises monitor its usage closely.” He added that while there is no specific regulation on zirconium silicate use in China, different batches contain varying levels of radionuclides, making it difficult to control. Despite this, he emphasized that natural background radiation exists everywhere, and as long as tiles pass quality tests, they are safe for use. Radioactivity is not unique to ceramic tiles. In fact, it's present in everyday life—from stones and metals to electronic devices like computers and mobile phones. Even though these items are more common than tiles, no health issues have been linked to them. In regions like Foshan, Jingdezhen, and Tangshan, where ceramics are produced in large quantities, no cases of illness due to radiation exposure have been reported among workers. This suggests that the risk is minimal for both industry workers and ordinary consumers. The standard for testing ceramic tiles, “Radionuclides for Construction Materials,” sets very low limits on radioactive elements such as radium, thorium, and potassium. These limits are so strict that even naturally radioactive stone products are allowed for use. The standard was introduced as a self-regulatory measure within the industry. Interestingly, foreign countries do not impose similar restrictions, and some international brands have raised concerns about it being a trade barrier when exporting to China. Experts have repeatedly stated that there is no medical basis for the claim that sanitary ceramic products are harmful. Meanwhile, in Italy, one of the world’s top ceramic-producing countries, there are no specific radioactivity requirements for tiles. Instead, foreign inspections focus on environmental protection, including industrial emissions and sustainable practices. Some researchers have explored alternatives to zirconium silicate, which is known to increase radioactivity when used in excess. Liang Yiliu, director of the Guangdong Provincial Technical Supervision Quality Supervision and Inspection Station, mentioned that high-brightness whitening mud can achieve similar results but requires a more complex refining process, significantly increasing costs. Therefore, he advised consumers not to prioritize extreme whiteness when purchasing tiles and instead consider more natural tones like yellow or gray. From “tile causing cancer” to “white tiles causing cancer,” the issue of radiation in ceramic tiles has been repeatedly discussed. A lack of public understanding about radioactivity has led to unnecessary fear. Many people are unaware of the ceramic industry and its safety measures. The low visibility of the industry, combined with the high visibility of negative stories, creates a distorted perception. Worse still, some individuals or groups may intentionally mislead the public to gain an unfair advantage in the market. To address these issues, it’s crucial to improve public awareness and promote accurate information about the ceramic industry. Both industry professionals and media play a key role in ensuring that consumers are informed and not swayed by misinformation.
