Let the mobile phone always have new technology: light energy screen
![]() |
On September 6, it was reported that when your phone runs out of battery, you can still send a quick text message. Even if the battery is completely dead, your phone might still be able to save your last known location. These technologies are already here. But when will we see a phone that never runs out of power? It sounds like something from a sci-fi movie. However, this idea is becoming real with a groundbreaking technology called Wysips, which converts both artificial and natural light into electrical energy to keep your devices running.
This innovative technology can be integrated into the screen of your phone, tablet, or smartwatch. It captures light and turns it into electricity. Currently, prototype devices using this technology can generate enough power in just 10 minutes to extend battery life by up to 4 minutes. As the technology improves, the efficiency is expected to increase significantly.
The French company SunPartner Group is actively working on enhancing the energy conversion rate. They've already signed partnerships with several companies to bring this technology to future smartphones. According to SunPartner experts, Sun New Energy Technology and Wysips represent the next generation of photovoltaic solutions. Photovoltaic technology uses solar radiation to produce electricity. Their approach involves placing ultra-thin electro-optic layers beneath a micro-lens network to create transparent solar cells.
The Wysips crystal component has an impressive 90% transparency, making it nearly invisible to the human eye. These solar layers don’t interfere with the screen’s contrast, readability, viewing angle, or brightness. The screen can convert ambient light into electricity and store it in the phone’s charging coil, just like plugging it into a wall outlet or a USB port. Earlier versions of the module could produce 2.5 mW/cm² under direct sunlight. A 10-minute exposure added 2-4 minutes of talk time. If the transparency is reduced to 60-70%, the output can reach up to 10 mW/cm², providing around 16 additional minutes of usage after 10 minutes of exposure.
Last month, SunPartner collaborated with Chinese manufacturer TCL to develop a prototype smartphone incorporating this technology. The first version is expected to be ready by 2014. This advancement marks a significant step toward a future where your phone can stay powered without needing a traditional charger. As more companies adopt this innovation, we may soon see a world where “always-on†power becomes the norm, not the exception.
