Aluminium gray chemical composition

Aluminum ash is a byproduct generated during the cooling process of slag in either electrolytic or cast aluminum production. It typically contains approximately 15-20% metallic aluminum (Al), along with aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃) and silicon dioxide (SiO₂). The exact composition can vary depending on the source of the ash, which influences its potential applications.

Electrolytic aluminum ash usually contains around 25.58% aluminum, 31.55% aluminum oxide, 5.56% silicon dioxide, and trace amounts of sodium oxide (Naâ‚‚O), magnesium oxide (MgO), calcium oxide (CaO), and iron/manganese oxides. Specifically, Naâ‚‚O ranges between 2-3%, MgO between 2.0-3.0%, CaO below 2.00%, and the combined FeO + MnO is less than 1.0%.

In contrast, fused aluminum ash has a different composition, with about 10% metallic aluminum, 50-60% aluminum oxide, 3.0-5.0% silicon dioxide, 1.0-1.5% sodium oxide, 2.0-3.0% magnesium oxide, 1.5-3.0% calcium oxide, and FeO + MnO below 1.0%. This type of ash often comes from the melting process of aluminum alloys.

Beyond the recovery of metallic aluminum, aluminum ash is also widely used in industrial applications such as desulfurization in electric furnace smelting. Its ability to absorb sulfur compounds makes it an effective additive in reducing emissions and improving the quality of the final metal product. As environmental regulations become stricter, the utilization of aluminum ash in sustainable practices is becoming increasingly important.
