Aluminium gray chemical composition

China Aluminum Network Aluminum ash is a byproduct formed during the cooling process of slag in either electrolytic or cast aluminum production. Its primary components include metallic aluminum (Al), aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃), and silicon dioxide (SiO₂). The exact composition may vary depending on the source of the ash.

For instance, electrolytic aluminum ash typically contains approximately 25.58% aluminum, 31.55% aluminum oxide, 5.56% silicon dioxide, 2–3% sodium oxide (Na₂O), 2.0–3.0% magnesium oxide (MgO), less than 2.00% calcium oxide (CaO), and less than 1.0% total iron oxide (FeO) plus manganese oxide (MnO).

On the other hand, fused aluminum ash has a different composition: about 10% aluminum, 50–60% aluminum oxide, 3.0–5.0% silicon dioxide, 1.0–1.5% sodium oxide, 2.0–3.0% magnesium oxide, 1.5–3.0% calcium oxide, and again less than 1.0% of FeO plus MnO.

Beyond the recovery of metallic aluminum, one of the major applications of aluminum ash is its use in desulfurization processes within electric furnace smelting. This application helps reduce sulfur content in molten metal, improving the quality of the final product. Additionally, due to its high aluminum content, aluminum ash can also be used as a raw material in the production of certain alloys or as a flux in various metallurgical operations. Understanding the composition of aluminum ash is essential for optimizing its reuse and minimizing waste in the aluminum industry.
