15 Cement Companies Receive Low-carbon Product Certifications
A few days ago, the Environmental Protection Center of the Ministry of Environmental Protection held a press conference to announce the implementation of the "Technical Requirements for Cement for Environmental Labelling Products" (HJ2519-2012) and to unveil the first batch of demonstration enterprises certified under China's environmental label low-carbon cement product program. Among the 15 companies that received the initial low-carbon cement certifications are major industry players such as Conch, China Building Materials, Sinoma, Jidong, and Lafarge. The cement industry is a fundamental part of the construction and infrastructure sectors, but it also remains one of the largest contributors to carbon dioxide emissions. In 2011, China produced approximately 2.08 billion tons of cement. According to analysis, producing one ton of cement clinker releases about 940 kilograms of COâ‚‚. As a result, the cement industry accounts for roughly 20% of total industrial COâ‚‚ emissions in China, making it a key target for emission reduction efforts.
Xin Zhiwei, deputy director of the Ministry of Environmental Protection’s Environment Development Center, emphasized that if the environmental labeling certification system is fully implemented across the industry, and if 30% of products carry the environmental label, annual CO₂ emissions could be reduced by at least 20.7 million tons. This potential impact highlights the importance of green product certification in driving meaningful environmental change.
