Photovoltaic power generation classification
Photovoltaic power generation can be categorized into two main types: off-grid and grid-connected systems.
1. Off-grid systems are typically used in remote areas where access to the main power grid is limited or unavailable. These systems consist of solar panels, a charge controller, and a battery storage unit. In order to power AC appliances, an inverter is also required to convert the direct current (DC) from the solar panels into alternating current (AC). This makes them ideal for standalone applications such as rural homes, boats, or emergency backup power.
2. Grid-connected systems, on the other hand, are designed to work in conjunction with the public electricity grid. The DC electricity produced by the solar panels is converted into AC using a grid-tied inverter, which then feeds directly into the electrical grid. These systems can be either large-scale, like utility-grade solar farms, or small-scale, such as rooftop installations. Large-scale grid-connected systems are usually state-backed projects that require significant investment, time, and land area. They are still in early development stages due to their high costs and long construction timelines.
Meanwhile, small-scale, decentralized grid-connected systems—especially those integrated into buildings—are becoming increasingly popular. These systems offer advantages such as lower initial costs, quicker installation, and minimal space requirements. Additionally, they benefit from government incentives and policies aimed at promoting renewable energy adoption. As a result, they are now the leading trend in photovoltaic power generation, especially in urban and residential settings.
