European machine tool giants set the Chinese road map in full swing

Nicola Leibinger-Kammüller, chairwoman of the TRUMPF Group, Europe's leading manufacturer of sheet metal processing, laser technology, and medical devices, recently stated that her company plans to increase investments in China, though she declined to provide specific details, citing uncertainty over final decisions. According to the national 12th Five-Year Development Plan for the machine tool industry, China’s machine tool sector is expected to reach a total industrial output value of 800 billion yuan by 2015, with annual production of CNC machines surpassing 250,000 units and a domestic market share exceeding 70%. This vast market potential has rekindled interest among established European firms that were already active in China. Horst W. Garbrecht, chairman of the German power tool manufacturer Metabo, which was founded in 1924, announced that the company plans to expand its presence in Shanghai, establishing subsidiaries to serve the entire Asian region. These subsidiaries will focus not only on product development and manufacturing but also on direct customer engagement across Asia. Alongside Metabo, other major European players like TRUMPF, EMAG, INDEX, and GF AG have also outlined clear strategies for their "China roadmap." Meanwhile, Luo Baihui, CIO of Jinmo Machine Tool Network, disclosed that Tongfa Group, a rapidly expanding Chinese machine tool company, has acquired Jiangsu Jinfangyuan CNC Machine Tool Co., Ltd. However, when asked about TRUMPF's involvement in similar ventures, the head of TRUMPF Group China, Mr. Long, remained non-committal. He confirmed, however, that the company is currently in talks with a Chinese machine tool firm regarding potential collaboration. This growing interest underscores the significant opportunities that China presents for global manufacturers, as they seek to capitalize on the country's rapid industrialization and technological advancements.
