If it is forbidden to add growth-promoting antibiotics to feed, animal health insurance, feed formulations and feed additives will become the focus of attention.
Today, the absence of antibiotics in poultry and pig feed has become a reality in the European Union, and in other countries, the use of such antibiotics has been strictly controlled, and the skepticism about its use prospects is increasing.
Europe's hard-won experience provides a preliminary understanding of antibiotic-free feed production, both for the domestic market (as an advance move) or for export purposes.
The EU has banned the addition of antibiotics and antibacterial agents to feed. Now, other countries are following suit (South Korea) or looking for measures to control the use of antibiotics (USA). Without a complete ban, it is logical to speculate that in many countries, the use of antibiotics will be more demanding in the future, and the use of antibiotics for the purpose of promoting animal growth will be severely restricted.
From the experience gained in working in the European feed industry, the most important thing about the replacement of antibiotics is to realize that no single â€œadditiveâ€ can quickly solve all existing problems. It is also important to recognize that the feed will be more expensive without antibiotics.
If the era of antibiotics is prohibited in poultry and pig feed, how should poultry companies respond? The following three aspects should be given special attention.
There is no doubt that antibiotics can fight common pathogens and provide a high level of safety. However, if no antibiotics are added to the feed, the overall biosafety process at the farm must be re-evaluated and its standards are likely to have to be upgraded to new levels. Assuming that under current commercial conditions, animal health can only reach an "average" level, we still have to rely on certain additives. However, implementing strict biosafety procedures will reduce the reliance on (expensive) antibiotic replacement additives.
Undigested proteins promote bacterial growth, and antibiotics can control this, so in the case of antibiotics, the crude protein content of the feed is limited. However, if antibiotics are not used, the crude protein content of the feed must be substantially reduced in order to ensure that the animal obtains only the right amount of protein for its own growth. The same is true for iron. E. coli is a common pathogen causing diarrhea in young animals, and excessive iron will cause the growth of E. coli pathogenic strains.
Similarly, rye, wheat, triticale, etc., which increase the viscosity of the chyme, should also be reduced as much as possible, as these grains reduce intestinal peristalsis and increase the time for pathogen colonization in the gut. In contrast, crude fiber should be increased, and in addition, the increase in feed pellets can produce the same effect, and it has been confirmed that the roughage can reduce the colonization of pathogenic bacteria.
In terms of replacing antibiotics, the discussion on additives is the most extensive, but most of these additives have not caused the expected response, simply because they ignore the above two aspects of the overall biosafety program and feed formulation. According to the experimental results, the most effective additives that can replace feed antibiotics are:
> Zinc Oxide
> Copper Sulfate
> Organic acids (not all types of organic acids are equally effective)
> Essential oils (only limited effect, preferably used in conjunction with the above additives)
The records show that the above additives have bacteriostatic and/or bactericidal activity and can therefore be used to replace common antibiotics. Other additives can indirectly enhance intestinal health. These additives include:
> Enzyme: The feed is rich in non-starch polysaccharides, and the viscosity of the chyme increases.
> Probiotics: Increase "beneficial" bacteria and reduce pathogenic bacteria.
> Functional fiber: Provides direct nutrition to "good" bacteria.
> Immunoglobulin: attack pathogens directly or specifically.
There are more additives available, but the above types are the most widely used. Of course, not all single feeds need to contain all of the above types of additives, and with reasonable feed formulations, certain additives will be able to take advantage of their unique advantages.
